How much does a brand identity cost for a small business?

A small business can pay anything from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands for a brand identity. What decides the price is who does the thinking, not how big the logo is. Here is how to read the quotes you get.

A brand identity for a small business can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. The number depends on one thing more than any other: how much thinking you are paying for. A logo is cheap to draw. Deciding what the logo has to say is the expensive part. In my experience, a proper identity from one senior person costs a few thousand dollars, and I will show where mine sits.

What the market charges, with sources

Prices change a lot by source, so here are three public ones, with their dates.

  • Logo contests. On its pricing page, 99designs lists logo design contest packages from US$ 249 to US$ 1,050 (checked in October 2026). You get many logo ideas. You do not get a strategy or a brand guide.
  • Brand consultancies. In a 2022 article, Fabrik Brands estimates US$ 5,000 to 30,000 for all the branding assets a small business needs, and says most small companies will not spend more than US$ 20,000 on their first branding.
  • Agencies. On Clutch's branding agency list, the first fifteen agencies I read show starting figures from US$ 10,000 to US$ 100,000. The fixed packages I saw there start at US$ 10,000.

That is a gap of more than a hundred times. The two ends are not selling the same thing.

Why the prices are so far apart

Four things move the number. Check each one in every quote.

1. Strategy. Research, positioning and naming take weeks of someone's time. A contest skips all of it. This is the biggest difference, and the one I would pay for. Marty Neumeier writes in The Brand Gap that we are "hardwired to notice only what's different". Finding what is different about your business is the strategy. Drawing it comes after.

2. Who does the work. A big agency charges for a team and an office. A freelancer or a one-person studio charges for one person. Neither is better by default, but you should know whose hands are on your project.

3. What you get at the end. A logo file is not an identity. An identity is the logo in several versions, colors, fonts, a guide that says how to use them, and templates you can edit. Ask for the list in writing. I go through each part in what is included in a brand identity package.

4. Revisions and ownership. How many rounds of changes are included, and do you own the final files? If the answer is vague, the price will move later.

What I charge, and what is inside

My brand identity is US$ 2,900, fixed, delivered in two weeks. It includes the logo and its versions, colors, typography, a brand guide of 10 to 20 pages, about ten ready-to-edit templates, and two rounds of revisions. If you also need the landing page, brand and page together are US$ 5,900. Half is paid at the start and half on delivery.

It sits between a contest and an agency on purpose. You get the thinking and the full set of files, from one person, at a price a small business can plan for. I have done this for more than a hundred clients over more than ten years, including the identity for Heni, shown above. See the brand identity page for what I deliver.

Do not compare quotes by the price. Compare them by what you hold on day fourteen: which files, which guide, which rights.

How much should a small business spend?

My opinion: spend enough to get the strategy and the full set of files, and no more until the business asks for it. If the money is very tight, a simple logo and two colors are a fine start, as long as you know it is a start. If you can afford a proper identity, one person doing the research, the design and the templates will usually serve a small business better than a large team. What you should avoid is paying agency prices for a logo, or contest prices and expecting a brand.

Three questions to ask before you pay anyone

  • What exactly will I have on delivery day? Ask for the list of files and documents.
  • How many rounds of revisions are included? Two is normal. Unlimited usually means slow.
  • Do I own the final files and the logo? The answer should be yes, in writing.

If you are also planning a website, price it separately. Branding cost and page cost are different jobs, and I explain the second one in how much a landing page costs. If you are still deciding what you need first, start with what a small business needs from branding in year one.

What to do this week

Write down your budget as a range, not one number. Ask two or three designers for the written list of what is included. Put the quotes side by side and compare the lists, not the totals.
